What Separates Good Vinyl From Cheap Vinyl
Two vinyl fences can look identical on install day and be five years apart in how they age. Here is what we specify and why.
- Wall thickness and virgin resin content. Thicker extrusions with UV inhibitors hold their color; thin recycled stock chalks and yellows.
- Routed posts with the rails locked into the post rather than screwed to the outside face.
- Aluminum or steel reinforcement inside the bottom rail on wide privacy panels, so the rail does not sag over a long span.
- Posts set in concrete below the frost line, exactly as with wood. Vinyl is only as straight as the post holding it.
- Proper expansion allowance. PVC moves with temperature, and a panel installed tight in February will bind in July.

Does vinyl get brittle in Maryland winters?
Quality vinyl with the right resin formulation handles our freeze-thaw range without a problem. Thin, low-grade panels are the ones that crack on impact in a cold snap, which is why we do not sell them.
Will it turn yellow?
Not if it is UV-stabilized virgin resin. We will show you the manufacturer's fade warranty in writing before you sign anything.
Is vinyl more expensive than wood?
Usually more per foot up front and less over its life, since there is no staining, sealing, or board replacement. Over ten years the two tend to converge, and past that vinyl pulls ahead.
Can a damaged panel be replaced?
Yes. Individual panels and pickets come out and go back in without rebuilding the run, provided the product line is still available, which is another reason to buy a mainstream manufacturer rather than an off-brand.
